Apparently, there are a lot of treasures out there for Maine rockhounds - I just stopped looking because all I thought I saw was sedimentary crap. The stuff I've been seeing all over the place ( Freeport/Portland Maine ) is Pegmatite - a set of mineral formation that can contain hidden gems.

Attempt #2

With my friend Patrick acting as official guide and well-needed motivator, attempt #2 went perfectly at Mt Apatite. First of all, the correct starting point is at a public baseball park/military depot named the Auburn Suburban Baseball & Softball - Field Complex:

577-599 Stevens Mill Rd, Auburn, ME 04210

Lon 44.0854, Lat -70.2796

...not the friendliest of entrances, but I was assured it was legal
