"Inventions" really mean invention attempts. After four brilliant builds - none yielding clear, elevated photos from the GoPro Session.  The goal was to find an alternate to the original camera kite, as Maine has ceased all consistent wind for the past two weeks. I want something I can chuck straight up that has a slowed descent while having a small footprint so I can keep it in the car.

Hopefully, more success happens further down the page.  Let's start recapping the failures first...

The Lawn Dart

Not my idea! I saw a cool video of a GoPro product (Aer) that is just that - a foam lawn dart that you cram your precious digital camera into and chuck it into the air, either to the nimble hands of an awaiting friend -or- let it crash into some soft grass. I could make that!

First things first... shock minimization.

... this giant parachute idea didnt work out so well. I couldn't find a sweet spot in getting the parachute size -to- deployment height just right. The drag going up is too great to get any significant height... at least throwing by hand. This thing may work well with a secondary launch rig like a slingshot or catapult, unfortunately, that goes against the whole goal of a PORTABLE aerial camera rig. Boooooo

How about a launchable helicopter????

After a few paper prototypes - I figured that a spring or rubber band tensioner would be tricky or problematic, long-term. What about a single piece helicopter... like one of those fluttering/spinning maple seeds? Can you rig something like that with a teather, otherwise the camera would have to spin vs being allowed to pivot,  and not ruin the physics?

Well let's nail a model of the physics in large scale first with some basic shapes.
